Carl Fulford was born on a farm in the Blue Mountain district of Collingwood, Ontario in 1915. At the age of 23, he left the farm to find work in the gold mines of Northern Ontario, settling in the growing mining town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario.
When war broke out in Europe in 1939, Carl joined the Royal Canadian Engineers. His unit was sent overseas, and he was stationed at a Canadian Training School in the south of England, where he served until the end of the war.
While on leave in Scotland he met his future wife, Rhoda Lowson. And a year later, they were married in Dundee, Scotland. After the war, Carl returned safely to Canada and re-settled in Kirkland Lake. Rhoda Fulford and their young daughter joined him a year later, travelling to Canada on the Queen Mary and docking at Pier 21 on July 1, 1946. While in Kirkland Lake, Carl and Rhoda welcomed two more children to their growing family.
After a lifetime of service in the mining industry and in education, Carl retired in 1980.
Carl passed away in 2001 at the age of 85.
