My grandfather Salvatore Di Falco was born in Sicily in 1931. His family was a poor family (they were eight brothers). When he was 20 years old, he went to Canada like an emigrant.

He was a guest in his uncle’s house in Toronto, in Canada. My grandfather stayed in Canada for 8 years. He worked as a builder, a waiter, and as a shoveller too. He worked very hard and sent part of his salary to his family in Sicily. My grandmother reached my grandfather in Canada in 1956.

My aunt Giovanna, their first daughter, was born in 1957. For my grandmother, life in Canada was very difficult because of the different language, the different climate but above all because she was homesick. In 1959, when my grandmother was pregnant with her second child my grandparents decided to come back to Italy. So my father was born in Castelfiorentino on the 20th of November of the same year. My grandfather likes telling this story because Canada is still in his heart.

He says that Canada is a modern country, rich in natural beauties. He has many photos and a video about Canada. My grandfather has still some relations and some friends there.

They married in a Catholic church.

There are 3 more family commemorative plaques also located on the Sobey Wall of Honour:
