A theatrical experience for students in grades 7 to 12 written and performed by shalan joudry, winner of the 2023 Robert Merritt Theatre Award for Outstanding New NS Play.

KOQM is a journey through time and land to experience the voices of fictional L’nu (Mi’kmaw) women. Hear and meet the women who might have spoken and walked through one area of forest over centuries. Guided by the strength of an ancient tree (“koqm”), the women share their personal stories of grief, humour and resiliency.

Examples of topics to cover in curriculum outcomes in History/Canadian Studies, English, and Mi'kmaw Studies.

  • Context to democratic cultural society pre-European and cultural shifts
  • Context for Peace and Friendship Treaties
  • Critical thinking in reviewing Canadian history as previously told. (Example: perspectives of encroachment on L'nu/Mi'kmaw lands even after Peace and Friendship Treaties, as designed by incoming Indian Act)
  • Effects of the Residential School System
  • Indigenous modern healing: stories and laughter in response to inter-generational trauma throughout - the power of place and identity, demonstrating how oral culture works (songs, stories, and medicinal knowledge passed through 400 years)
  • The use of oral storytelling technique
  • Conversations about changing L'nu culture, livelihoods, and language
  • Conversations about the resiliency of culture, livelihoods and language
  • Conversations about the role and duty of Truth and Reconciliation

Teachers can request the script for review and to prepare ahead of time. The script includes notes for timeline-reference of the European-Canadian situation the scene is referencing.
