I was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 23rd, 1911. I arrived in Canada at Pier 21 on July 15th, 1930 aboard the SS Westernland from Southampton, England as an immigrant boy to work on the farms on Nova Scotia. I was 18 years old and went to Daykne Farm in Mount Denson, NS.

After working on farms at Riverton, Pictou County and at Hopewell Pictou County, I started a barber shop in Brookfield in July 1935. I met my wife and was married on Friday, February 13th, 1942. She was born in Brookfield, NS on January 8, 1920. I joined the R.C.N.V.R. in 1939 in Halifax. I served on the first Canadian Aircraft Carrier H.M.C.S. Nabob. After coming home from overseas I served on the Canadian Corvette H.M.C.S. Strathroy. I was discharged in Halifax in September, 1945 with the rank Stoker P.O. I arrived home from overseas on the Queen Mary to New York and from there went to Halifax by train.

My wife and I have lived in our home for the last 50 year. I retired in September, 1976 from the Newport corners Naval Radio Station as it was then known. From March, 1948 until September 1976 I was the Chief Heating, Power and Maintenance Engineer. We have a family of three boys, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
