Ernest Paul Hanna was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on January 25, 1920. At the start of World War II he signed up and proudly served his country with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. On February 15, 1941 he boarded the Warnick at Pier 21 Landing, bound for Europe. After serving four years in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe, he returned home on the Queen Mary October 22, 1945; he was discharged to return to civil life on November 29, 1945.

Ernie was awarded the following: the 1939-1945 Star; the France and Germany Star; the War Medal 1939-1945; Defense Medal; the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp; and most recently, the Dutch Medal.

Ernie worked at the Sydney steel Plant until his retirement. He was married to his wife Alma (Kawaja) for 56 years. They were blessed with seven children: Paul, Gloria, June, Sharon, Diane, Linda Lee, and Adrian. Ernie's Family grew to include sixteen Grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ernie was a member of the Reserve army, and retired as a Sergeant. He became actively involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, serving on their Executive and numerous other Committees over the years.

Ernie was a hockey enthusiast at various levels both on and off the ice. Besides hockey, he enjoyed other sports, including hunting and fishing.

Ernie lived a fulfilling and active life, but sadly, following a short illness, he passed away on June 22, 2003.

We, his children and our spouses, proudly dedicate this plaque in his memory.

Dad will be missed but always remembered.
