War Bride

Mary Margaret Gregg was a War Bride born and living in South Wales. She was one of four siblings (Edward, Wil, Meghan, and Mary) born to Sarah and Gwilym Price. Mary worked in a munitions factory in London before and during World War II. Her future husband, James Gregg, was a soldier in the Canadian Army on leave in London and planned to visit his Hewitt Family relatives in Arbroath Scotland. One night Mary was out with her friends Winston and Ella Leonard at a night club where she subsequently met James. Needless to say, he never made it to Scotland that trip. They fell in love.

On December 2, 1943 James applied to the Army and received permission to marry.

They were married at the town hall in Felinfoel, Llanelli on February 9, 1944.

The following years James served in Britain, Belgium, Netherlands, France, and Germany. His deployment ended and he returned to Canada (September 18, 1945), and a then pregnant Mary continued living with her Family in Wales until her immigration was approved.

On March 16, 1946 a Son Peter James was born on the family farm, Tyrhidian Farm, Llethri Rd., Felinfoel, Llanelli, S. Wales. Mary and baby Peter set sail from Southampton on the Queen Mary (July 16, 1946) and disembarked at Pier 21 in Halifax on July 23, 1946.

After a very excruciating sea voyage, Mary and Peter along with many other War Brides and their children boarded a train to head across this vast unknown country called Canada for the city of Fernie, B.C. There they were greeted by James (who had never seen Peter), and family. Mary and Peter lived in Fernie for approximately four months. Later, in November 1946 they moved into a new home in Kimberley. Mary had never seen so much snow and wondered what she had gotten herself into. James had been hired and employed by Cominco's Sullivan Mine where he continued to work until his retirement in 1978.

On June 7, 1947 a Daughter Margaret Elaine was born in the Kimberley, B.C. hospital.

The family resided in Kimberley for many years.

Mary Margaret Gregg died December 8, 1984.

In loving memory,

James, Peter and Carolyn, Fred and Margie, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren
