Nicholas Bosiuk

Our great-grandfather Nicholas (Mikolaj) Bosiuk was born on September 26, 1903 in Zelena, Skalot, Poland (now Ukraine).

Sponsored by Wasyl and Maria Peristy of Ethelbert, Manitoba, he was able to immigrate to Canada.

After bidding his family and friends goodbye, he dressed into the nearly new clothes and footwear donated by his village people. He set off by horse and wagon to the nearest train station. A few days later he was on a train to Danzk (Gdansk), Poland. He travelled on the steam ship Andania to Canada, via Liverpool, England. He arrived at Montreal, Quebec on November 17, 1929.

Once all of his documents were cleared, he boarded a CNN train for Ethelbert, Manitoba.

Nicholas lived with and worked for the Peristy family until he got settled. He later travelled to Humboldt and Canora, Saskatchewan to work in the fields at harvest time.

Nicholas married Katherine Burla from Garland, Manitoba on February 19, 1943 in Dauphin, Manitoba. They had two sons, Edward (born in Dauphin, MB in 1943) and William (born in Ethelbert, MB in 1948). They lived in Dauphin for a few years until moving to Pine River, MB where they made their home and raised their family.

Edward married Shirley Watson from Swan River, MB in 1969. They had two sons, Christopher and Andrew (partner Nicole Burton).

William married Lovey Warelis from Ethelbert, MB in 1972. They had a daughter Pamela (husband Jason Franklin), and a son Jason (wife Jessica Everett). William and Lovey have six grandchildren.

Nicholas lived in Pine River until a stroke put him in the hospital and a personal care home in Dauphin. He passed away on March 26, 1983 at the age of 79 years. His wife Katherine passed away on February 18, 1985 at the age of 78. Both are buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin, Manitoba.

Although Nicholas lived in Pine River, Manitoba for most his life, his heart was in Ethelbert, Manitoba.

In memory of our great-grandfather Nicholas Bosiuk.
