Judith Goldberger arrived in Halifax from Bramenhafen Germany on February 11, 1948 aboard the ship, General Sturgis. Even though the voyage went well for her, she spent many hours caring for her friends’ children because these mothers fell ill during to the voyage. After the ship docked and processing was completed, Judith was put on a train and arrived in Montreal and then afterwards continued on to Toronto. Judith Goldberger went into a sponsoring family where she was employed as a maid for a year. Martin Markus arrived in Halifax sometime in October 1948 from Germany on the ship General Langstaff under the name Emery Hartman. Because his identification documents had been lost or destroyed due to the war, Martin could not emigrate. Emery Hartman, Martin Markus’ friend had the proper departure documents to come to Canada. Instead of going to Canada, Emery had decided to travel to Palestine. He gave his departure documents with his name to Martin. After Martin arrived in Canada, his true identity was clarified and he was permitted to stay. Judith and Martin eventually met in Toronto in 1949 and were married on January 7, 1950. They are now retired, living in Toronto near their two children and seven grandchildren.
