Died September 4, 1993 in Ft McMurray, Alberta

 

  • Met her husband George Willis Renford DeLorey, a soldier with the West Nova Scotia Regiment at a social in the summer of 1940.
  • Married March 19, 1941 at All Saints Anglican Church, Warlingham, Surrey, England.
  • Had her first baby, Linda Mary on September 11, 1941.
  • Her husband was deployed to Europe (Africa and Italy) July 10, 1943.
  • Had her second baby, James Henry on July 19, 1943.
  • In early October 1944, received orders from the Canadian Forces that she would leave for Canada. She left her home in Warlingham, travelled by train to London, England. There she was met by Canadian Army trucks and was taken to the “Maple Leaf Club” where she and the children spent the night in a single bunk sharing a room with other War Brides that were to be sent to Canada. The next day, she and her children took the train to Grenack, Scotland.
  • Sailed on the “Ile De France” on Friday October 13, 1944.
  • Arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia October 22, 1944 (9 days at sea).
  • Met by Army personnel and put on a train to Western Shore, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.
  • Met at the Station by mother-in-law Hattie DeLorey, and walked to her home.
  • No running water, no phone, no electricity, no flush toilet, no busses, no sidewalks or paved roads… no pubs!
  • Wood stove, an outhouse and oil lamps, a whole new world!
  • Her husband George became ill in Italy, arrived in Canada June 28, 1945. He spent many months in Camp Hill Veterans hospital. Officially discharged from Canadian Armed Forces on August 6, 1945.
  • Celebrated 50 years of marriage with a renewal of vows on March 19, 1991 at All Saints Anglican Church, Ft McMurray, Alberta.
