Walter L, Violet L Drew
My husband Walter, my son Laurence and I, Violet Drew, came to Canada together. Many relatives saw us off at 1:00pm on August 1st as we were drawn out by tugboats. While on the ship we had life saving exercise in the afternoons. I shared a cabin with two other women and children and my husband was in a cabin with nine other men. He took our son on a walk around the deck each day as I did not feel well. Children had their dinner earlier at 5:30pm and we had our dinner later at 6:30 or 7:00pm so one of us could stay with the children. We arrived in Halifax at 2:00am so it was rushed up on deck because the engines were off. After breakfast we went to the immigration shed where we sat on benches in alphabetical order. Then we took a train to Toronto. It took days and they had to put ice in the roof to cool us off because it was so hot.
