The Henk Beuker Family

The family was sponsored by Dan Blender, a gardener in Craven, Saskatchewan. The trip to Saskatchewan by train took several says- arriving on July 1, 1952. It had rained for days in the Regina area and the roads were covered to a slimy soft muck, in which we got stuck.

Having relatives who preceded the family helped somewhat, but nevertheless the lack of knowledge of the English language was a real and severe problem. We could tell many stories about wrong translations and expressions, now deemed to be funny, but serious at the time.

The family eventually settled in Ontario, where Henk Beuker worked at the steel mills in Hamilton. Henk and Tryn have passed on in 1999 and we are very proud of them for being victorious on the long struggle to master the language and to improve the economics of the family. We remember them fondly. Gary went to attend the University of Saskatchewan and has practiced engineering for many years; Harry became a proud member of the RCMP and served his country for more than 30 years. The girls married fine fellows and settled in Ontario where they have raised excellent families.
