The Giovanni Ferrarelli Family

Born September 16, 1912, son of Giuseppe Ferrarelli and Maria Teresa Iaconis in the town of Castelsilano (Casino), Crotone, Calabria, Italy.

Married Maria Rosa Cosentino born May 2, 1916. They were wed on December 24, 1933. She passed away on April 2, 2012.

Had one child, a son, Giuseppe Ferrarelli born January 13, 1935 and died on February 22, 2015.

Served in the Italian Army in WWII. Was a prisoner of war in Germany. Escaped with his fellow inmates. A German woman working at the prison informed them that the war was over and that they were planning to execute them. She then left the gate open and gave them the opportunity for freedom. The year was 1945.

First visit to Canada was November 25, 1951 from the port of Halifax. Departed November 1, 1954 from the port of New York. Immigrated to Canada permanently on May 25, 1955 by ship, Saturnia 330, Italian line Napoli-Halifax.

He was the first family member to immigrate and sponsored six of his ten siblings with their families to enter this great country.

Although he missed his country of origin, he was a hard working proud Canadian and grateful for the opportunities and freedom that Canada gave him and his family.

Passed away March 7, 1970 unexpectedly of heart failure at the age of 57. Left behind two granddaughters Rosangela Ferrarelli and Gianna Ferrarelli.
