With the war on its way, Martin heard that the ship Montclare was preparing to leave from Antwerp, Belgium to Canada, to Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He purchased three tickets so the family would depart and go to Canada – a new country – and make a fresh start. They left with only what they could carry.

Once they arrived in Canada, they stayed with friends (who were also their sponsors) in Ruthven, Ontario. Alois Tuma was a farmer so Martin and Pauline worked for him until they were able to purchase their own house and farm land.

Their second child, a son, was then born – John Gerald Konecnik, January 13, 1946 at Hopewell Hospital in Leamington, Ontario.

They prospered and did well for themselves. Their daughter had five children. Their son never married and had no children. They had eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
