Margaret Kennedy Archibald Sykes

Margaret Sykes nee Kennedy was born on January 27, 1910 in Dumbarton, Scotland. She was the second oldest of thirteen. Margaret came to Canada aboard the Andania on November 10, 1928. The Salvation Army organized the trip to Canada for children of families that were overcrowded.

Upon her arrival in Canada Margaret worked in the service (domestic) industry in Ontario. She was not allowed to leave Ontario until she paid back all the money she owed to the Salvation Army for her trip to Canada.

Around 1932, Margaret married Andrew, a Scotsman. They struggled during the time of the depression but later bought a house in Toronto. They were together for 40 years before Andrew died in 1969. After living on her own for 10 years, Margaret got married a second time to Arthur Sykes. Together they travelled all over the world.

Margaret says that coming to Canada changed her life completely. It didn't change her as a person but rather her way of life.
