Jean K. Bowes Lawrie

(Story told by her younger sister, Mary K. (Bowes) Astephen)

Jean was 28 years old when she came through Pier 21 in February 1946. Travelling by rail from Halifax to New Westminster, BC with her son, Andrew, she began life in Canada living in the Old Vancouver Hotel where her daughter, Barbara, was born in May 1946.

Jean left Haywards Heath February 1946 and we did not meet again for 21 years. She came east to visit me in North Sydney, Cape Breton by air, staying for a month or so, on her way back to England to care for our Mother, who was still living in our home there in Haywards Heath.

In 1969, we met again in Britain, then I visited British Columbia when Jean lived in Mission, a couple of times before Jean died in December 1989. There is a brick at Pier 21 in her memory.
