Isaac Israel and Bernard Gotfried

Icek "Isaac" Gotfried, Arrived on the General Stewart Heinzelman, November 19, 1947.

I arrived in Halifax in the fall of 1947. Since we had four hours to wait for the train to depart for Winnipeg, we roamed the town and we saw jugs of vinegar in the store windows which we thought was wine. It was cheap so we bought some and drank it like wine but it tasted like vinegar, so we said that the wine in Canada is sour like vinegar.

Our train ride to Winnipeg was three days and four nights where we slept on hard wooden benches. We arrived to Winnipeg on a Sunday morning and we were greeted by our relatives and their friend (aunts uncles and cousins). A week later I started a job building kitchen cabinets, then I changed jobs and became a woodcarver. In 1950 I met a nice young lady, we got married, had four daughters and seven grandchildren. I love them all.
