Herman Streuber

Herman Streuber (1881-1965) was known as the "Father of German Baptist Immigration." Born in Germany, Streuber came to Canada in 1914 after being employed in manufacturing management in England. He was fluent in German, French, and English, and spent most of his years in Winnipeg where he was in the insurance business. He played a major role in founding the North American Baptist Immigration and Colonization Society (formerly German Baptist Immigration and Colonization Society) in 1928-29 following a trip to Europe in 1927 to begin the process of immigration, particularly among German Baptist people. The first settlements were begun in Manitoba in the late twenties. After the Second World War, immigration reached high volumes and immigrants were placed all over Western Canada.

Streuber was one of the organizers of the Canadian Christian Council for Resettlement of Refugees. He not only worked as a volunteer but often took trips in conjunction with this work at his own expense.

His wife Frida Ruf (1890-1997) was a tireless supporter of his work and often entertained newly arrived immigrants in their home. His son Edmund was a Chartered Accountant in Winnipeg and served as Treasurer of NABICS.
