My parents were married on Feb.3, 1953 and left Holland for Canada within days of their simple wedding. They were allowed to bring $40.00 maximum and a crate and some luggage. My mother was below deck with the other women and children and my father was above. My mother was extremely ill the whole way over which I believe took more than a week. Winter was not a good time to arrive in Canada. A farmer picked them up in a horse and open wagon and drove them to his farm. Once there, he led them to a cabin in the woods, and my father started working on the farm the very next day. The rest is history.....
