Richard (Dick) Johnson served in the RCN from 1939 to 1972. He began his naval career at 17 as an Ordinary Seaman and finished his service as a Lt Commander, the Commanding Officer of the 726 Communications Squadron in Halifax. During the Second World War years he served his country in convoys that traversed the Atlantic, working aboard numerous ships as a signalman and communicator. Semaphore, signal flags, morse code and radio predated high tech and the internet and those communication tools were integral to naval operations at that time. During the Korean War he served on the HMCS Iroquois when it was shelled by enemy fire. In retirement he continued his passion as a communicator engaging in amateur radio and connecting with people around the world. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Richard passed away in 1985. He is fondly remembered for his compassion, his love of learning and his commitment to making the world a better place.
