I called Thailand refugee camp a home because I was born there. It wasn’t much, but it was a home. Before I was born my mom lived in Piobolu and my dad lived in Dawau. They met each other somehow in Piobolu, and came to Mae Ra Moe refugee camp, because Piobolu was burned.
I remember the day I found out I was coming to Canada. I didn’t know what to think. My dad thought coming to Canada would be a better life for our family because we were very poor, and also my big brother was very sick. My parents didn’t know if he could make it. There were many bad times like overhearing my parents talking about not having enough money for my big brother medical care and hearing news about relative dying because of Burmese or disease. There were also many fun times like playing by the waterfall and eating Karen food after a long day. All those good things that I went through are just going to be memories, and I’m going to miss it.
The night before my family and I came to Canada, we invited our families and friends to send us off. After a long trip we finally got to Canada. When we got to Welcome House we were all so tired and had a lot to go through. I couldn’t believe what I saw the next few days. White little things was falling from the sky. I discover that it was called snow. On the first day of school it was all so different from the school in Thailand refugee. I didn’t understand anything they were talking about, and if I think someone was asking me a question, I would just nod. Now I know how to speak English.
Coming to Canada was a big change for my family and I because my big brother is healthy now and my family is getting better at English. I met many wonderful friends and people. However we are still hearing very sad news from Burma like Burmese are still attacking. I am very thankful to be able to come to Canada because I get to tell my story.
