Pierre Demmerle
A Life of Craftsmanship, Dedication, and Family (1931 – 2014)

Roots and Early Youth in Switzerland
Born in 1931, in the picturesque town of Neuhausen in the Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, Pierre Demmerle grew up surrounded by the rich heritage of his family. His parents owned a local pastry shop that was physically connected to the family home. While the pastry shop itself concluded with his father's generation, the historic family house still stands today and remains owned by his sister Trudi, her husband Rheinhart, and their children.

Pierre’s youth was defined by the turmoil of World War II. Although Switzerland maintained its official neutrality, its borders could not completely wall off the conflict, and bombings along the northern frontier disrupted everyday life. As Europe rebuilt in the post-war era, Pierre dedicated himself to mastering his craft, officially training to become a master pastry chef (confiseur). In the quiet discipline and precision of Swiss confectionery, he learned patience and the joy of bringing delight to others.

A New Chapter in Canada (1954)
In 1954, holding a suitcase and a diploma of mastery in Swiss confectionery, 23-year-old Pierre made the bold decision to cross the Atlantic to build a new life in Canada.

He settled initially in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, where his specialized expertise earned him a position with the renowned Swiss chocolate manufacturer Kambly. It was during these early Quebec years that he met Armande Niquette and married in 1956. Together, they started a family, eventually settling in Kirkland on Montreal's West Island.

Career and Family Life
Pierre’s professional dedication and natural leadership led him from the artisanal world of pastry into industrial food management. He joined Bovril Canada Inc. at their landmark facility in Pointe-Claire, where he occupied the position of Vice-President.

Together, Pierre and Armande raised four children: Joane, Chantal, Brigitte, and Bruno. Their home was filled with warmth, shared meals, and Pierre’s magnetic storytelling. Gathered around the table, his children—and later his ten beloved grandchildren—listened spellbound as he spun tales of his Swiss childhood, the family house connected to the old pastry shop in Neuhausen, singing and chanting.

Later Years and Entrepreneurial Spirit
Later in life, Pierre and Armande divorced. Pierre returned to Switzerland, living in Schaffhausen for two years to reconnect with his homeland, before deciding to return to Quebec to be close to his family.

Never one to truly slow down, Pierre channeled his culinary experience and passion into supporting his family during his retirement. He actively helped his daughter Brigitte and his son-in-law, chef Bernard Zingré, in their entrepreneurial endeavor at their restaurant, Le Creux du Vent, in Val-David. Living in Val-David during this time, Pierre was in his element—lending his expertise, sharing his warmth, and bringing joy to guests alongside his family.

An Enduring Memory
Armande passed away in 2010. Pierre rejoined her four years later, passing peacefully in 2014.

Though Pierre Demmerle arrived in Canada with little more than his trade and his dreams, the life he built flourishes through his generations—connecting the enduring walls of the family home in Neuhausen to the vibrant, loving legacy he created across Quebec in Saint-Hyacinthe, Kirkland, and Val-David.

While Pierre’s journey began in Switzerland, his greatest masterpiece remains the vibrant life he built in Quebec, leaving an indelible legacy through his children and grandchildren whose roots are now proudly and deeply planted in Canadian soil.
