No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada's first and only segregated battalion, was raised in Nova Scotia by the African Nova Scotian Community in response to the institutionalized racism of the Canadian Armed Forces that largely precluded Black men from serving in the First World War.

On Saturday, July 9th, the Government of Canada will issue a formal apology to the men of No. 2 Construction Battalion and their descendants. Prime Minister Trudeau will apologize for the racism faced by the men both prior to and during their service, and their unequal treatment with regards to pay, rations, equipment, and living conditions while serving.
