The Immigration Story of Clasina Kamps (Dutch Immigrant)

The Museum reviews and accepts donated personal or family memories and histories into its collection. As a learning institution, the accounts help us understand how individuals recollect, interpret, or construct meaning from lived experiences. The stories are not modified by Museum staff. The point of view expressed is that of the author and not that of the Museum.

Story Text:

After the war my dad wanted to immigrate to Canada with my mom and 8 children to give us a better life. My dad paid for all our passage with money he borrowed from his boss Karel Vekaden and he paid it back in full.
I was 10 years old and remember things so vividly. Until ten years ago I was so homesick for my relatives then my grandson was born then I felt at peace within myself. We came with just the clothes on our backs but we all turned out to be excellent Canadians and proud to be so thanks.
